A Clinical Study on 17 Cases of Thyroglossal Duct Cyst and Fistula

Abstract
|
|
|
Clinical observation was made on 17 cases of thyroglossal duct cyst and fistula with brief review of literature.
These cases were admitted to the department of surgery of Daegu Fatima Hospital from January 1968 to December 1975.
The following results were obtained.
1. Most cases were under 15 years old(70%) and the ratio of Male to Female was nearly same.
2. Age of symptoms and signs were developed mostly under 5 years old(80%).
3. The prominent symptoms and signs were soft, frequently fluctuated, Cystic mass and chro-nically pus discharged fisula located on just below the hyoid bone, midline of the neck.
4. The types were cyst, 11 cases and sinus 6 cases, but there were no dermoid cyst or any malignancy.
5. There were 4 cases of having connection with the thyroid gland which were identified
grosslyon theoperation field and 5 cases with microscopic examination.
6. Thyroid scanning were done on 15 cases preoperatively and revealed no abnormality.
7. The entire cases were operated according to the Sistrunki technique under the general anesthesia.
8. There was no recurrence and complication except one case of wound infection.
